DIY Indoor Planter Box in 7 Easy Steps

With the arrival of spring, you’re likely focusing on the outdoor plants around your home at Cresleigh Ranch. However, if you’re a plant lover, you don’t need to stop there! An indoor planter box can help you bring the outdoors inside by providing a perfect place to grow your favorite green and blooms. Purchasing a planter can be expensive (particularly if you’re choosing something ceramic or porcelain). Today, we’ll show you how to create a DIY indoor planter box from wood in seven simple, easy steps.

Step 1: Gather Materials

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Wood boards (we suggest using pine or cedar)
  • Saw
  • Wood glue
  • Screws
  • Drill
  • Measuring tape
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Step 2: Measure and Cut the Wood

Once you’ve gathered all the materials, it’s time to measure and cut the wood boards to create the planter box’s sides and bottom. Of course, you can customize these measurements according to the size of your space, but we suggest a 2-foot-long, 1-foot-wide, and 1-foot-tall box to start.

Step 3: Assemble the Box

Next, it’s time to assemble the box. Use wood glue and screws to join the sides and bottom together. Be sure to clamp the boards in place while the glue dries to ensure a tight seal.

Step 4: Sand the Box

After the glue has dried, use sandpaper to smooth the box’s surface and edges, giving it a polished finish. Don’t skip this step! It helps to elevate the look of your planter and keep anyone from getting splinters on rough edges.

Step 5: Paint or Stain (Optional)

If you want to give your planter box a pop of color or protect it from moisture, you can paint or stain it. Choose a paint or stain that’s safe for indoor use and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application.

Step 6: Drill Drainage Holes

To ensure your plants have proper drainage, drill small holes in the bottom of the planter box. This will prevent water from accumulating and causing root rot. If you’ve ever watched a plant die in a pretty (but solid) pot, you know that these holes are absolutely necessary!

Step 7: Add Soil and Plants

Finally, it’s time to add soil and plants to your indoor planter box. Choose plants that are well-suited for indoor environments and provide them with the appropriate amount of sunlight, water, and nutrients.

Enjoy the Results!

Bringing plants in your home can help increase feelings of well-being, decrease stress and anxiety, and just make your living space more pleasant. Take the time to craft something customized and enjoy it even more!
